I have just joined this groups and hello/salam to all. Yes I do work in Scotland but as part of my job I also visit Pakistan almost every 2 months. I am also following a few children born during floods in 2010.

for more details on what I do please do visit www.habibmalik.com and would love some feedback.

thanks

Hi, I'm cheating, I am not a Pakistani aid worker (in the sense that I am neither from Pakistan or working in Pakistan) but I am in Islamabad right now and have lots of friends here.

Feeling rather sad right now to hear from former colleagues who work in local NGOs about the big business of commissions that happen in order for local NGOs to get contracts/funding from UN or INGOs. Any advice about how my local friend can route round the pay back system? I am not saying that every project he submitted was perfect, but it's not fair that he has to pay money before he can get a foot in the door. The commission system seems to operate mostly through Pakistani staff, although one does wonder why one can never get a job in the UN! ...??

Anyway, please note, I am not wishing to stir up insult to anyone on this blog but am genuinely looking for some advice about how to get his foot in the door. I have worked with and known this guy for a long time, and I am well aware of the complexities of Pakistani life, but he's not lying and this is a barrier to successful running of his NGO.

Awaiting your wise words, and on a more frivolous note, any suggestions for nice places to go for fair trade handicrafts? There used to be a nice place in Isl that had art and crafts as well as a small cafe - way back when -but of course I can't remember the name and can't find it on the net.

Hi all,

I am new to the group! I actually work in India, but I'm very interested in working in Pakistan next. Are there any good websites or sources with opportunities? If anyone would be willing to speak with me about the availability of opportunities there, I would appreciate it! Thanks! - Claire
