The key to reducing poverty is… fewer armchair experts”

It seems everyone knows the best way to reduce poverty and make development better. Why are there so many armchair experts on development and how can those of us in the sector advance conversations with those outside of it? Would be keen to hear your thoughts.Check out the full post, including some stupid memes here:http://www.whydev.org/the-key-to-reducing-poverty-is-fewer-armchair-experts/See More

"Thanks J! I agree that point 1 is a big topic which probably deserves its own post. I don't quite follow what you are saying on point 2 though. When you say "can't do everything", do you mean cannot help the entire population…"

"I completely agree that much (but not all) of the current fervor around 'innovation' is somewhere between nonsensical and misplaced in the larger scheme of 'what actually works', based on actual evidence. And what actually works…"

How services, not “innovation,” can change lives

What happens when “innovation” is valued to the detriment of basic services? I demonstrate how an emphasis on innovation and advocacy have sidelined basic rehabilitation services in improving the lives of those with disabilities, and argue that we need to pay more attention to what works, and less to what is sexy.Check out my non-sexy post over at WhyDev.See More

Weh Yeoh replied to Mona Fetouh's discussion How do you describe what you do to people outside the sector? in the group Collective Wisdom
"Good discussion! I rarely used labels like aid worker or development worker, but simply try and explain what I do in plain English. Well, as much as possible. Also, on a slightly more tongue-in-cheek note, this scenario is exactly why this guide was…"

Hey aid worker! It's not about you.

In my latest blog post on WhyDev, I managed to stir up a hornet's nest and 46 comments from both sides of the debate. I argue that humblebragging, selfies and strategic sunset/cocktail/laptop/feet up pics are not a great look for aid workers, because, apart from looking a bit ridiculous, excessive broadcasting portrays the work that we do poorly. There was a strong reaction to this post, some for and some…See More

Are there organisations that provide funding for individuals to work with grassroots organisations?

As the title suggests, I'm curious to know whether there are organisations that provide funding for individuals to work as technical advisors, or capacity builders (buzzword alert) for grassroots organisations. I have had the pleasure of working in this position for a disability organisation in Cambodia, but after May this year, funding has run out. There are lots of volunteer schemes funded by AusAID that do exactly this, but this is not a path that I want to pursue. Are there any…See More
