"Aid is about doing a thing - implementing a project, running a programme, etc. That needs certain skills. If those skills don't exist in the local labour market, you have to bring them in. That costs extra in expat salary and benefits. You (the…"

M&E takes governance

What would happen if you ran a whole country as a development project? By development project, I mean running a whole country, or at least large parts of if, by log-frame. Imagine you could tie the performance contract of the economic development minister (nationally or provincially) to actual,…See More

Social media and the simple narrative

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 12:52pm 6 Comments

Simple narratives of aid are problematic. I think they're problematic whether they're presenting the problem over and over again or a simple story of success for one person. Smart aid needs smart donors and smart donors need more than just a simple narrative to stay interested.

Aid marketing is, after all (at least for the most part), about trying to get people to part with their…

The headquarters of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in Epulu, DRC was attacked over the weekend and buildings burnt, guards killed, okapis eaten, local people displaced. I want to do something. I want to take action. I want to make this right, this one thing, to make it better. I want to spend my days running campaigns. I want to go there…
